In a significant move to recognize and empowering modern-day heroes OFW- Overseas Filipino Workers , the Department of Tourism (DOT), in collaboration with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), has officially launched the Balik Bayani sa Turismo program. This groundbreaking initiative is a vital component of the National Government’s Reintegration Program for OFWs, aiming to create opportunities and support for our modern-day heroes and their families.

Understanding the Balik Bayani sa Turismo Program:

1. A Collaborative Endeavor:

The Balik Bayani sa Turismo program is a testament to the collaborative efforts of DOT and DMW. This partnership underscores the government's commitment to providing comprehensive support for OFWs as they reintegrate into the local community.

2. Key Objectives:

The program is strategically designed to address various facets of OFWs' reintegration, focusing on livelihood, entrepreneurship, savings, investments, and financial literacy. By creating diverse opportunities, the initiative aims to equip OFWs and their families for a successful transition back to life in the Philippines.

3. Aligning with National Goals:

The program's alignment with the National Government’s Reintegration Program emphasizes its role in contributing to the overall economic and social development of the country. Recognizing the invaluable contributions of OFWs, the initiative seeks to harness their skills and experiences to benefit the local economy.

4. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU):

The institutionalization of the Balik Bayani sa Turismo program is formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between DOT and DMW. This MOU solidifies their commitments to implementing various initiatives and creating a supportive environment for OFWs.

5. Holistic Development:

Beyond economic aspects, the program also emphasizes human capital development. The DOT, in particular, sees the transformative power of tourism as a means to foster unity, national pride, and an enhanced overall tourism experience in the country.

6. Strengthening Skills Through Training:

A crucial component of the program involves strengthening the skills, aptitudes, and competencies of OFWs and their families. This is achieved through various tourism-related training opportunities, including culinary tourism, retail business, farm tourism, homestay operations, and tour guiding.

7. Reciprocating Contributions:

The program acknowledges the significant role OFWs play in the country's local economy through their remittances. By offering training opportunities and creating avenues for alternative livelihoods, the initiative reciprocates the contributions of these modern-day heroes.

8. "Teach-It-Forward" Program:

OFWs with senior positions and extensive experience are encouraged to participate in the "Teach-It-Forward" Program. This initiative allows them to share their knowledge and experiences as resource persons or trainers in the tourism industry.

9. Alternative Livelihoods:

Recognizing that some OFWs may choose to stay in the Philippines, the program aims to provide them with alternative sources of livelihood in the tourism sector. This approach ensures that the skills acquired abroad are utilized to enhance the capabilities of the local tourism workforce.

10. Formal Rollout in May:

The program is set to formally roll out in May, marking a significant milestone in the government's efforts to empower and support OFWs in their journey towards reintegration.

In essence, the Balik Bayani sa Turismo program is a holistic and comprehensive approach to reintegration, addressing not only economic aspects but also the overall well-being and development of OFWs and their families. It reflects the government's commitment to harnessing the potential of returning OFWs to further contribute to the growth and success of the Philippines.
